Habits and routines for unlimited memory.

Today I want to share with you some tips and ideas I learned to increase my memory capacity. I believe the more we can remember, the more meaningful life we can live. We can also become much more productive. I always wondered how we could memorize more from our day-to-day lives and not forget those memorable or meaningful moments in life. That is when I came across the book LimitlessLimitless, by Jim Kwik.

Jim Kwik state that you first create your habits, then your habits make you. He talks about Episodic memory, which means how much you can remember from your day or your life’s events.

The first tip or idea is to review your day and think your day through. I use the bullet journal method, developed by author Ryder Carrol, to review my day in the evening before bed. Jim mentioned that you pull two or three things from your day and be grateful for them. Jim quotes, “gratitude is the memory of your heart and spirit” He mentioned that when we feel thankful, we experience a more extraordinary life. Gratitude rewires your nervous system for peace and performance. Start listing things in your life that money can’t buy. Gratitude puts you into a parasympathetic state, a resting state, not an executive decision-making state. Good sleep help with long and short-term memory; get a sleep study if you experience sleep issues.

For better memory in the morning routine he recommends that we should:

  1. Create a dream journal and memorize our dreams by writing them down.
  2. Make your bed, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” The brain also loves a clean environment.
  3. Drink water, about 1 liter in the morning, and take your probiotics.
  4. Exercise, Study has shown that morning exercise help with deeper sleep; 3 minutes is enough.
  5. Brush your teeth. Use your opposite hand; it challenges your brain and forces you to be present, observe, and pay attention. You are exercising your attention muscle.
  6. Take a cold shower; it helps reduce inflammation caused by stress and resets the nervous system. It also challenges you to do difficult things. Do difficult things; life will get easier. e.g., toast at a wedding, etc.
  7. Journal what would make today successful. What three things personally and professionally would make this day successful. Different each day. Tea smoothie while you journal to prepare for the day. Maybe light reading.

Do this with kids; ask them about their days and what they are grateful for.

Let me know what you think about these tips? What does your Morning and Evening routine look like? What have you done recently to improve your morning and evening routines? How does your routine differ, and how did it change over the years?

    Hi Melvin

Awesome post, and I hope to adopt a few of the techniques you’ve listed.
Another one that I find really good to stay sharp is to do a crossword or problem-solving task every morning with your coffee. i.e. play a game of ‘wordle’ or sudoku or whatever your preference is! Usually wakes the brain up and gives it a taste of the day to come

    1. Hi Taariq, thanks for your comment and your tip. I will definitely try out that one. It should be great !! I wonder what else do you have up your sleeve?
